Wow, this first project was... different from what we expected.
So, we all came into the nursing home, then had an orientation. We took all of our supplies to the room the event was scheduled to take place, then began to set up. It was a bit messy, and none of us thought to bring cleaning supplies. We were relying on tissues to clean up paint and shaving cream until we started stealing paper towels from the restroom.
By the time both tables were set up, one group had already demonstrated the project to the seniors and they were happily creating their masterpieces. We presented the project to the next group of senior citizens, but they didn't want to do the project! This was unexpected, but we eventually convinced them to try out the craft.
We jumped between tables, helping the seniors and each other with the project. Although the process wasn't as smooth as we expected it to be, it was still extremely fun! The seniors seemed skeptical at first, but they warmed up an enjoyed the strangeness of the whole event. The Victoria Gardens coordinator working with us said that she was excited to see how the next event goes.
Although it didn't go exactly as expected, this event was an extremely useful learning experience. We learned ways to choose better projects, plan better for the actual event, and make the process smoother.
Thank you to everyone involved with Saturday's event, whether you were able to make it or not! I can definitely tell you, with your help, the next service event will go waaaay better!
Have a great week, and see you at the next meeting!
